Get Gravatar Images Using C#

1/24/2011

This is going to be a short one, as there really isn't that much to this. Anyway, one of the things that I had to implement (well didn't have to but figured I might as well) was Gravatar support to my website. Gravatar is a service for "Globally Recognized Avatars", basically if ever you see a comment on a website and there's a picture of some sort next to it, it most likely came from that site. In order to use their service, as a website, you have to be able to generate links based off of a person's email address (and those links can be generated in about 2 lines of code):

  41:         /// <param name="Email">Email identifier</param>
  42:         /// <param name="AppendJPG">Should jpg be appended to the link?</param>
  43: /// <returns>The full path to the Gravatar image link</returns>
  44:         public static string GetImageLink(string Email,bool AppendJPG=false)
  45:         {
  46:             string Ending = AppendJPG ? ".jpg" : "";
  47:             return "http://www.gravatar.com/avatar/" + Utilities.Encryption.MD5.ComputeHash(Email.Trim().ToLower()).ToLower() + Ending;
  48:         }
  49:
  50:         #endregion
  51:     }
  52: }

Well it's more than 2 with comments, etc. Also you may note that there is a call to Utilities.Encryption.MD5.ComputeHash, which is a function from my utility library. That function is only a couple of functions itself:

   1: public static string ComputeHash(string Input)
   2: {
   3:     MD5CryptoServiceProvider MD5 = new MD5CryptoServiceProvider();
   4:     byte[] InputArray = System.Text.Encoding.ASCII.GetBytes(Input);
   5:     byte[] HashedArray = MD5.ComputeHash(InputArray);
   6:     MD5.Clear();
   7:     return BitConverter.ToString(HashedArray).Replace("-","");
   8: }
Of course you may just wish to go and download the code from my utility library (just in case there are updates). But that's all there is to it really. So try it out and happy coding.
